Burma, wooden sitting Ava Buddha, ava period 1618-1789 with old lacquer and pigments. Seated in virasana on a high base, his right hand lowered in bhumisparsha mudra – the gesture “ for the earth to witness ”. Buddha images from the Ava period are recognizable by the large forehead. The face was oval shaped with a pointed chin. The eyebrows were curved like human eyebrows. The eyes glazed downwards in the state of meditation, the bridge of the nose was straight and low. The lips were small and little pointed forward with a clear cleft above the upper lip.
